FAQ
I’ve never danced before, how do I start?
In each style of dancing the instructors run a ‘beginner’ class which is aimed at those who have never done any dancing, or any dancing in that particular style. Each classes is ‘drop in’ which means you can try it out and pay as you go. There is no commitment to take any more lessons. If you feel comfortable with the steps being taught in the beginner class after a few lessons you may wish to move up the intermediate classes.
Do I need to bring a partner to the classes?
You don’t need to bring your own partner. You’ll be changing partners many times throughout the class.
What should I wear/bring?
Comfortable casual clothes are recommended. Sneakers are not recommended as they tend to grip too much and don’t allow you to turn on the floor. Open back shoes are also not recommended, as they tend to come off easily. Smooth soled shoes are best, as they turn easily. Women may wish to wear heels if they feel comfortable in them. A water bottle is highly recommended.
For the Zumba classes exercise clothes and sneakers/street shoes that don’t grip the floor too much are recommended, along with a water bottle and towel.
Are the classes suitable for children?
All the Latin dance classes listed on this website are designed for adults. If your child is interested in learning ballroom dancing there are a number of studios in Townsville that have classes specifically for children. These include Dance Time Studios (dance@dancetimestudios.com) and Connections (ph: 0417 419 085). Latin Vibrations offers Zumbatomic, which is for children aged 4-12 years old. This is held on Wednesdays at 3.30pm at LV Dancespace, 2/70 Ingham Road, West End.
What are the differences between Cuban style Salsa and LA/Linear style?
Cuban salsa is where salsa all began. Its dance moves are characterized by complicated arm movements and it differs from other styles visually because it tends to be ‘circular’ as opposed to linear. Cuban style involves rhythmic middle body movements derived from the old Cuban Rumba. These movements have an Afro-Cuban heritage and are also popular in Mambo
LA style is exiting, elegant and sensual, incorporating suave “shine” footwork, dips and arm styling. It’s one of the most popular Salsa syles around the world today, with regular appearances of high profile LA style performers at huge Salsa events. It is a style that has borrowed extensively from other dance styles. It has been influenced by Cuban and New York style Salsa, Jazz, Swing and even Ballroom dancing. From these influcences, the LA style has been refined to produce a distinctive range of turn patterns. Most LA style moves are based on the “cross-body lead”, where the man leads the woman across his body in a linear motion.
What is Reggaeton?
Reggaeton is upbeat Latin music with a mix of rapping. It is influenced by beats of plena, bomba, reggae and hip hop. Reggaeton music is danced with “perreo”, a dance originated in Puerto Rico where Reggaeton started to get popular. Reggaeton is a sexy and passionate dance with a lot of hip movements, making it very popular in clubs and discos worldwide, and especially in Puerto Rico.
